Does Influencer Marketing Work for a New Brand? What It Can and Cannot Do

Updated September 25, 2026· 4 min read

You have just launched a skincare brand. A friend says, "Just get influencers to post about it." Then you read the horror stories: brands that paid lakhs and saw nothing, campaigns nobody could measure, creators who vanished after payment. So does it actually work, or is it a way to burn a small budget?

The honest answer is it works for some jobs and not for others. It is very good at earning trust and producing content quickly. It is not a machine that turns a budget into guaranteed sales. Brands get hurt when they expect the second thing from the first.

What influencer marketing is genuinely good at

  • Borrowed trust. People often believe a person they follow more than a brand's own ad. Kantar's India research, as reported in the trade press, found influencer content ahead of digital ads on brand favourability (15 versus 12 per cent) and purchase intent (10 versus 9 per cent). That is a real edge, but a modest one, so do not budget as if it were a multiple.
  • Content you did not have to produce. A creator who makes a good video hands you a real person using your product, which you can often reuse if you agree usage rights up front.
  • Reaching a specific niche. A creator who talks about oily skin reaches people who care about oily skin, without paying to reach everyone else.
  • Fast learning. Comments on a creator's video show you which claims, questions and objections your future customers actually have.

What it cannot do

  • Guarantee sales or reach. Nobody controls the platform's algorithm. A post can do very well or very badly with the same creator.
  • Fix a weak offer. If your product page is confusing, your price is out of line or your reviews are thin, more eyeballs will not save it.
  • Pay back in two weeks. Industry surveys show many brands expect payback within a month, but trust builds over repeated exposure. Plan for a longer horizon.
  • Work without measurement. Without unique links and codes, you cannot tell which creator did anything. See how to track a campaign.
  • Do five jobs at once. A first campaign that tries to deliver awareness, sales, content and repositioning together usually delivers none clearly.

Pick one goal for your first campaign

Choose the single result you would be happiest with, and design the campaign around it.

If your goal is A sensible format What to measure
Awareness Several smaller creators posting Reels in your niche Views or reach, saves, shares
Content Creator videos with agreed usage rights Number of usable videos, and cost per usable video
Sales Creators who already talk about your category, each with a unique link and code Code redemptions and tracked link sales
Learning Free or paid product sent to a few small creators Repeated questions and objections in comments

What a realistic first 90 days looks like

This is an illustrative timeline, not a promise:

  • Weeks 1 to 2: pick one goal and a budget you can afford to lose part of, then shortlist and vet creators (see how to get quality without overpaying).
  • Weeks 3 to 4: write the brief, agree payment terms and send a small paid test (see how to pay for results).
  • Weeks 5 to 8: posts go live. Read numbers at 7 and 30 days.
  • Weeks 9 to 12: put more budget behind what worked and drop what did not.

A way to see many creators on one brief

If you want several creators to try the same brief and want the results side by side, a contest is one way to do it. On EarnLeague, you set the brief and a prize pool, and entries from verified accounts are ranked on measured performance. It suits goals like awareness and content, where you want volume. To explore it, create a campaign, or compare your options in the platform guide for brands.

Influencer marketing does not guarantee sales. It gives you a cheaper, faster way to find out what your customers respond to.

Statistics in this space vary by source and year, so treat any single number as a rough guide and check recent data for your own category.
